March feels different out here.

The calendar may still say winter, and chore time can still start in the dark with a north wind in your face, but you can tell something’s changing. The days are getting longer. The sun sticks around after supper. The ice in the tanks doesn’t fight quite as hard. The grip of winter is loosening.

In agriculture, we live by seasons. We understand better than most that nothing stays frozen forever.

Winter can be a tough stretch — physically and mentally. Long nights. Cold mornings. Equipment that won’t cooperate. Markets that test your patience. Calving season pressure. The kind of tired that isn’t just in your body, but in your mind.

March brings a shift.

It’s not dramatic. It’s subtle — like frost turning to mud, like a gate that finally swings easier, like cattle stretching in the warmth of a late afternoon sun. You start thinking about grass instead of snow. About planting instead of feeding. About what’s ahead instead of what you’re just trying to get through.

That change matters.

Mental health in agriculture doesn’t always get talked about. We’re wired to push through. To handle it. To keep moving. But even the toughest ground needs a thaw. Even the strongest operation needs rest and reset.

As the season turns, give yourself permission to turn with it.

Step outside and actually notice the longer daylight.

Take a minute to breathe before the next task.

Call a neighbor just to talk — not about prices, not about weather — just to connect.

Let yourself look forward to something.

Spring reminds us that growth follows hardship. Calves hit the ground. Seed goes in. Pastures green up. What looked dormant wasn’t dead — it was waiting.

If this winter has felt heavy, remember: the ice is breaking. The mornings are getting lighter. The land is preparing for new life.

And so are you.

March is a reminder that renewal is built into the rhythm of this life we’ve chosen. Keep going.

The season is changing
