There are important things to discuss this month…and I don’t just mean the special date night that you should be planning for that someone special…but rather, discussing that beating heart that works hard every day.

Are you taking care of it?

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the US. There are a few things I would encourage you all to do to keep hearts healthy:

  1. You’ve heard it before, but it remains my number one thing to do: eat a healthy diet (like the MASH or Mediterranean diet) and exercise daily.

  2. Maintain a healthy blood pressure.

If it has been a while since you have had it checked, please get a BP check-up.  Some health departments or fire stations will check for you for free.  A yearly appointment with a health care provider is very important.

February for some is a quieter month, what a great time to make sure your blood pressure is normal. High blood pressure is often a silent problem, people often have no symptoms, and it goes unrecognized.

  3. Learn CPR.

There are programs offered at most local health departments or hospitals.  There are even on-line programs.  CPR saves lives.

While the flowers and candy (jewelry is great too!) seem to be the main theme during this month of red and pink, please don’t forget your heart.  This incredible organ needs a workout regularly, healthy food and regular check-up.

Your loved ones will thank you!
