June is a very busy month for many farmers and cattlemen. I wanted to take time this month to remind our hardworking men to take a good look at their current state of health and remind you of some important information.
Men have shorter lifespans and higher mortality rates across the top 10 causes of death, BUT with greater awareness and early detection we can improve long-term outcomes.
The following are the top six causes of death and warning signs:
Heart Disease
Risk factors include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, diabetes, smoking, & inactivity
Warning signs: Chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue, irregular heartbeat
Cancer
Prostate, lung, colorectal, liver, & pancreatic cancers are big factors.
Warning signs: Changes in bowel or urinary habits, persistent cough, any unexplained weight loss, blood in urine or stool.
Unintentional Injuries
Stroke
Warning signs: (FAST): face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech, Time to call emergency services
Diabetes
Increases risk of heart disease, kidney disease, & nerve damage
Warning signs: Increased thirst, frequent urination, slow-healing wounds
Liver Disease
Associated with alcohol use, hepatitis, & metabolic conditions
Warning signs: Random swelling, jaundice
This is a great month to make an appointment with your primary care provider if it has been over a year.
